The Study of Automatic Color Sorting for Recycled Glass

Absrtact
Taiwan is currently facing dwindling natural sand resources, as well as a shortage of qualified building material supplies. Apparently, the ‘‘resources” have been one of the major considerations affecting construction projects. In addition, over-exploitation of natural sand has led to damage in the environment, seriously affecting water and soil preservation as well as the ecological balance. Glass is one of the oldest man-made materials. It is produced in many forms, including packaging or container glass, flat glass, bulb glass, and cathode ray tube glass, all of which have a limited life in the forms in which they are produced. Hence, glass need to be reused/ recycled in order to avoid environmental problems that can be created, if they will be stockpiled or sent to landfills. Theoretically, glass is a 100% recyclable material; it can be indefinitely recycled without any loss of quality. Glass recycling is the process of turning waste glass into usable products. Waste glass should be separated by chemical composition. Also, depending on end usage and local processing capabilities, it should be separated into different colors. Sorting waste glad by color will increase its added value. Originally, color separation was done by manually. However, the degree of color separation was 70%. The degree of color separation increases from 70% to 90% immediately by introducing a new machine which can separate the color of waste glass automatically. It increases 4 million NT dollars per year. Also, five direct labors was reduced due to automatic equipment. It will save 2 million dollars per year. Next, in order to increase the degree of color separation, one noise factor (weather) and three control factors were selected. An L8 orthogonal array is provided by using Taguchi method to find out the optimal factor level combination. The results show that degree of color separation increase from 90% to 95%. It increases one million NT dollars per year. Thus, the total benefits are 7 million NT dollars per year. It successfully recycles waste glass and facilitates the environment friendly. 行政院環境保護署計畫成果中英文摘要(詳細版)格式範
